What is a Presbyterian?
Smyrna is a member of the Presbyterian Church [USA] which is the largest Presbyterian denomination in America. We are part of the Reformed movement of the Reformation that began five hundred years ago with men like Luther, Calvin and Knox among others. The cornerstones of Calvinism are Scripture Alone, Faith Alone, Grace Alone. The Word of God is our foundational document- not tradition or councils. The Bible gives us insight into what it means to be God’s people and his guiding word for our lives and it is our Faith that binds us to God and His word. All of this comes to us by Grace not works. We cannot earn salvation nor is there a routine of actions or non- Biblical beliefs that ensure God’s love. Grace is a gift God’s unmerited love that sustains us in this life and beyond.

“We would like to see Jesus” [John 12:21] is a request from a few unnamed Greeks to Philip that can help guide the life of any church. A church is not a civic organization that is organized simply for its members or to do good works in the community. A church is a gathering of believers in Christ Jesus, Son of God, who strive to be stronger disciples by prayer, worship, study and ministry beyond the confines of its walls. The Smyrna church has come together with new Mission and Vision statements to better strive to live out the mandate to go forth into all the world and make disciples. This is a blessing and challenge. What worked years ago might not work today so our discipleship is an ongoing challenge to find new ways to serve, to reach out, and to deepen our faith and commitment in our Christ. We invite you to come and share your ideas on ministry, to join with other members in a lifelong quest to see Jesus in all that we do.

Joining a Presbyterian Church
After worshiping and learning about a church for a time and believing this is where God wants you to learn, grow and serve, how do you join a Presbyterian Church? There are three ways to become a part of Smyrna Presbyterian Church. First is by transfer of letter from another Christian Church which we would request when you ask. Second is by affirmation of faith and baptism if you have never joined a church before. We do not re-baptize. Ephesians tells us that there is one lord, one faith, one baptism. If someone wants to make a new commitment, which is a wonderful way for any Christian to make a new start, this would be done at a worship service but with no baptism. Finally, if there is no church letter to transfer, reaffirmation of faith is also done at a worship service. The Session, the governing body of the church, meets with each prospective member to get to know them and to be the first to greet them formally.
